After several appearances on the
Tonight Show, Letterman, Conan, and even a Comedy
Central Presents, Russ has been overdue in releasing a
CD for quite some time. Thanks to good friend Kirill
Bichutsky, Russ has released a debut masterpiece
titled "Stray Doggie Style."
The album kicks off with Russ
being introduced at his home club, the famous
Carolines on Broadway. Carolines is the first of 6
venues that Russ is recorded performing at throughout
the disc. The album sort of documents a typical night
for an upper tier comedian, working several rooms
throughout NYC's top clubs.
Meneve's style is simple in it's
delivery. His pacing is rapid, and his jokes consist
of a standard setup, punch, & tagline. Very old
school, but Meneve's skewed & twisted thoughts
take you on a freakish journey in which you often
think to yourself "What a sick fuck he is,"
while you laugh at the absurdity he spews.
Russ tends to be all over the
place, but his entire set is neatly packaged into a
solid form of hilarity. He can work both clean &
blue, but often revels in the dark side. At Carolines
he starts off talking about wearing a trash bag in
order to bang hookers in public, then follows up with
an observation about crazy drunken chicks and their
promiscuous behavior. This all takes place within a
span of a mere 30 seconds, keeping the listener at
home attentive and barely able to recover from
laughter in time for Russ' next joke.
A cool aspect of this album is
the fact that it was recorded via wireless mic placed
on Russ. We get to here Russ mutter, clear his throat,
make small talk, & mumble to himself while he's
being introduced at each club. It can be compared to
placing a microphone on an NFL head coach during the
game. It gives the listener a cool insight, and
closure to douche bags like me who often wondered what
a comedian tells the MC when he goes up on stage.
Since the album was recorded in
one single night, and spanned 6 different clubs, Russ
was faced with the daunting task of not repeating any
jokes. This is where his brilliance comes through, as
he flawlessly pulls off a full 60 min set and makes
you forget he's club hopping.
52 FUCKING TRACKS later, the CD
wraps up with Russ poking fun at religion, and
implementing it during sex. Typing it out would do the
joke no justice, but it perfectly caps off a wonderful
journey in a night from one of NYC's top performers.
The audio quality of the CD is
great, but there is a noticeable tapping sound
throughout it. The CD itself is loaded with cool PC
extras, including videos of Russ performing (some of
them at the August 2005 Cringe Humor Show), audio of
his dirtiest material from a prior CH Show, and his
hilarious "Shorties Watchin' Shorties"
animated skit about the British Army.
The packaging is a sweet high
gloss soft cover, and the cover art is tremendously
dark & twisted, much like Russ is on stage. Kudos
to Kirill once again.
