The West Coast Report
September 11th, 2004 - Sarah Silverman @ The SF Punchline
Last weekend, a bunch of us CH'ers went to the Punchline in
San Francisco to catch Sarah Silverman perform. All being fans of her work, we
were all eager to catch her live, some for the first time, others not. Sarah
generally always sells out at the Punchline, and this Saturday night was no
exception.
Our host for the evening was a fellow named Rick Mitchell. If memory serves
me, he's from Los Angeles. This guy was quite enjoyable. The only thing from
his set I remember is him complaining about the hair on his head, which has
the consistency of pubic hair. And surprisingly, his pubic hair has the consistency
of head hair. LOL. All in all, I remember laughing at a lot to his stuff which
I wish I could remember, but hopefully I'll catch him again.
The feature act for the night was Chris Hardwick. Some people know him from
his MTV days as the host of Singled Out in the mid 90's. Some might also know
him from VH1's "I Love The 90's" show that everyone seems to love.
He also starred in the independent film "Art House" with the great
Adam Carolla. Anyway, seems like Chris has been trying his hand at stand-up
these past few years. I saw him a few months ago and I felt he was trying way
too hard to be edgy, but I guess road work and stage time has sharpened his
game. For the most part, he's trying to be cringe. I really wanted to hate his
act because it incorporated his guitar buddy & him doing songs, an
"American Dinosaur" slideshow which would be deemed hack at any
cost, and his constant reference to all his work in Hollywood, but I found
myself enjoying his show very much. He's not a natural comic like Attell or
Vos, but the guy has good writing and did better than I thought for an L.A.
douche.
Finally, Sarah Silverman took the stage, clad in a cute orange shirt and creme
pants that suited her well. I didn't notice any big changes in her act from
the last time I saw her, but she has solid material as usual and is always
enjoyable to watch. The way she acts so seriously when she prays that she'll
find semen in her dead granny's vagina had me dying of laughter. We saw her on
the 3rd anniversary of 9/11, a tragic day which she spoke about, because it
was the day she found out that the soy latte she drinks everyday has 900
calories. And that other thing also happened that day. Whether she's talking
about licking jelly off her boyfriends dick, the hilarity of the holocaust, or
how anal is "the real way" to have sex, Sarah Silverman is always a
delight to watch perform
